What mobile phone offers are available in Spain?
There are two types of mobile phone provider in Spain. The traditional providers, which own their own networks (Movistar, Vodafone, Orange and Yoigo) and offer total or partial discounts on the handsets in exchange for signing long term contracts (18 or 24 months) and charging more expensive tariffs for your calls. On the other hand, the Virtual Mobile Operators (OMV in their Spanish initials) are mobile phone providers in Spain that don’t offer any discount on the handsets but provide cheaper tariffs. The market leaders of the Virtual Mobile Operator mobile phone providers in Spain are Simyo and MasMóvil.
If your priority is getting an expensive handset free of charge or for less than its market price, or you plan to change your handset frequently, you’ll probably prefer a tariff from Movistar, Vodafone or Orange.
However, if you already have a handset and want to save money on your mobile phone bill, you could be better off choosing one of the mobile phone companies in Spain that offer cheaper tariffs. At the moment, mobile phone providers in Spain like Simyo, MasMovil or Yoigo offer tariffs from 8 cents a minute, compared to the average charge of 17 cents a minute that users pay for using mobile phones in Spain (source: 14th European Union Report of Broadcasting and Telecommunications).
