How much does it cost to make mobile calls from Spain?

There are four mobile phone companies with their own license and network in Spain: Movistar, Vodafone, Orange and Yoigo.

Besides those providers there are a number of companies that operate without an own network and that, in order to provide a service, use the coverage from another company’s network. These companies are the Virtual Mobiles Operators (OMV in their initial in Spanish) and have been operating in Spain for the last two years.

The main OMV, in terms of market share, are Simyo, MasMovil, Carrefour Móvil, Eroski Móvil and Happy Móvil. These mobile phone companies in Spain offer cheaper tariffs than the companies with their own network, except Yoigo, which also offer very competitive tariffs.

Which mobile phone companies in Spain are cheaper?

Mobile phone companies in Spain fix their tariffs differently from the UK. In Spain there aren’t packages of minutes and texts, but fixed rates charged per minute and per text.

Based on research from the Spanish consumer organization FACUA, the cheapest mobile phone companies in Spain are MasMovil and Simyo, with Yoigo in the third place. In the other extreme, the most expensive mobile phone companies in Spain are Movistar, Orange and Vodafone.

By August 2009, when this article was written, the cost per minute with Simyo is 8 cent per minute and 0 cent per minute to other Simyo during the first 10 minutes of each call. The cost per minute with MasMovil is also 8 cent per minute and 0 cent per minute to other MasMovil for the first 2 minutes of each call. However, based on the latest broadcasting and telecommunication report from the European Union, the average cost per minute in Spain is 17 cent. If you want to call the UK from Spain, you can save up to 33 cent per minute by choosing a cheaper mobile phone provider. MasMovil offers 19 cent per minute calls to the UK while calls with Movistar are at a 52 cent per minute rate.
